Play for Progress presents: Music & Poetry from Ruth Padel and Anna MacDonald

An evening of poetry and music surrounding the human journey of migration with award winning poet and writer Ruth Padel and musician Anna MacDonald. The evening will examine why we migrate through poetry and song, and all proceeds will go towards Play For Progress.

Ruth Padel

Ruth is an award-winning British poet and writer. She is Professor of Poetry at King’s College London where she teaches Poetry and Drama for the Creative Writing team of the Department of English.

Why do animal species migrate – and why do we?

Padel’s poems address one of the defining movements of our era. Starting with the first living cell to appear on earth and the earliest spread of plants and microbes across the globe, she turns to the seasonal migrations of birds and beasts. But civilization too is the story of migration. From early hominids out of Africa and the founding of Rome by refugees from Troy, to diasporas of the modern world, attempts to colonize the moon or today’s mass migrations, detention centres and asylum-seeking, she explores the ways in which we are all ‘from somewhere else’.

Anna MacDonald

Ruth will be joined by musician, writer and Play for Progress co-founder Anna MacDonald on harp and guitar as we wind our way through the story of world movement. Anna is a multi-instrumentalist singer and songwriter whose celtic roots shine through her songs whether sung in Scots, English or Gaelic. She naturally understands her musical heritage and this is beautifully reflected in her voice and music.
