Festival of Belonging

We are looking at ‘belonging’ through the lens of visual arts, music, spoken word, a conversation café and a conference on Belonging.

  • The exhibition started in the Triskel Arts Centre in Cork on June 8th and is running until the 24th of June. Artists are all refugees and migrants and a lady from the Traveller Community from all over Ireland. They are Nasir El Safi (Sudan), Gregory Kalala (DRC), Sobia Saad (Pakistan), Juan Carlos Morón (Venezuela),  Leanne McDonagh (Ireland) and Elton Sibanda (Venezuela).
  • On June 23rd we start the rest of the Festival with a celebration of Spoken word and World music in the Triskel Arts Centre. Spoken word artists are Majed Mujid  (Iraq), Basel Alkhalaf (Syria) , Kanyo Khazadi (south Africa) and Anton Floyd (Cyprus/ Lebanon).
  • The music will be performed by Orba, a band of Arab music with musicians from Egypt, Syria, and Algeria and Citadel, the band of refugees from the Cork area, with music from Burundi, South Africa, Angola and Tanzania.
  • June 24th starts off with a Conversation Café, facilitated by ThinkSpeakDo. Come and have a coffee and a chat with a refugee/migrant/traveler and have a discussion around the them of Belonging.  (The Haven Café, 11 AM til 12:30 PM) Guest speakers will be Lassane Ouedraogo and Sharin Pillay.
  • At 2 PM the conference will start with keynote speakers: Debora Kayembe(DRC), Rector of Edinburg University, Prof MAggie O’Neil from Dept of Criminology and Sociology of UCC with a special interest in place makeing and belonging, and Dr. Wanette Tuinstra, Human Rights Law lecturer and activist. Other speakers will come from the DP centres and the university.
