Our Home: Moving Stories
What does ‘Our Home’, the theme of Refugee Week 2024, mean to each of us wherever we come from? Listen, contribute and explore as we come together to celebrate our diverse communities.
Join us in a shared journey around the ground floor of our new Town Hall where people come together to share their stories through art. Hear from people in Tower Hamlets who have moved countries and continents to better their lives, some escaping war and persecution, others settling to help build our society and community. The exhibition will open for a free ticketed private view on Wednesday 19th June.
You are also welcome to view the exhibition between 9am and 5pm on Thursday 20 and Friday 21 June from 9am-5pm.
Artwork featured:
- “One World”
These artworks, made by asylum seekers in the UK from Life Seekers Aid, are displayed here to honour those who support the rights and welfare of asylum seekers and refugees. The artists aim to build more empathy and understanding among a wider audience.
- “The Journey Home“
Members of Crisis made a series of artworks on the theme of home, using a variety of media. The work explores ideas around belonging, movement and stability.
- “Migrate Journey”
This installation explores the untold histories of migration to Tower Hamlets. The project is a collaboration between Mile End Community Project / Nurull Islam, architect Shahed Saleem, and photographer Rehan Jamil.
- “Brighter Futures, Our Home, Our Rights”
The platters, pots, vases and poems were co-produced in 2023 by Brighter Futures, a group for young migrants based in Praxis Community Projects and supported by Kazzum Arts.
The “Our Home, Our Rights” project was a collaboration with Queen Mary University of London and the Centre for Studies of the Home which culminated in an event at the Museum of the Home in summer 2023.
