A Light in Dark Times : Das Laterndl – Austrian exile theatre in London 1939 – 1945

An online exhibition about a theatre company run by refugees from 1939-1945. Das Laterndl (The Little Lantern) was an exile theatre group of Austrian refugees, mainly theatre professionals, who performed at the Austrian Centre in London. In the first years the shows were dominated by political cabaret, with many of the sketches and songs relating to the actors own experience of being a refugee in the UK. Find out how the Laterndl refugee artists articulated their own stories and navigated the need for escapist entertainment versus the call for action with their productions.
