Refugee Week Scotland and Fife’s Fence records held a “special label” showcase to mark the opening of Refugee Week Scotland 2012. The launch at the Refugee Week Scotland festival hub took place on Monday 18th June and was deemed a fantastic success. This year it was not only supported by the Scottish Government but also succeeded in gaining direct ministerial support this year with the attendance of Deputy First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon.
The Refugee Week Scotland opening concert was delivered in partnership with British Red Cross and aimed to raise awareness for the week. It sought to draw new audiences to Refugee Week Scotland, offer refugees a once in a lifetime experience and explore fundraising opportunities.Refugee Council Scotland and Refugee Week feel that all objectives were met. The event gathered lots of media attention (print, television and social), including more diverse sources such as the music press.
Audience feedback was overwhelmingly positive with many commenting that they had never been to a Refugee Week Scotland event or were not previously aware of issues.
Refugee audience members also commented upon their new experiences and Refugee Week are extremely proud to see this rise in support and increased audience participation.
A big thank you to King Creosote and Jethro Kinavuidi for giving their time and support to Refugee Week in particular for raising the profile of Refugee Week. Their strong performances and interviews gave prominence to Refugee Week Scotland and will have helped to raise money for the continuous work of Scottish Refugee Council and British Red Cross.
