Sharing food with others is a powerful symbol of love, care and connection. Food is perhaps the most powerful way to nurture relationships and celebrate cultures. Food says we are neighbours, friends, or chosen family. Food is healing. Food is home.
Every Refugee Week, people come together over food; to share recipes, teach each other dishes and of course, sit down to share meals.
Quick & easy ideas to take part:
- Share or swap a favourite recipe
- Learn a new dish! You can take it one step further and learn about the migratory journeys of different ingredients and recipes throughout time
- Host or join a cooking event or class (find What’s On and search ‘Food and Drink’ in the categories).
One step further:
- Do you work in a restaurant or café? Could you introduce a Refugee Week special dish that will inspire your guests to have conversations? Perhaps this dish celebrate one of your staff member’s homes?
- With many people living in temporary accommodation with no access to kitchens to cook, local cafés, restaurants and food banks can be a place where people come together and connect over food. Can you get involved by supporting your local community?
