The Community Whistling Choir

The Community Whistling Choir

“The Community Whistling Project”, facilitated by Aliaskar Abarkas, cultivates unity, delight and solidarity through collective whistling. In partnership with Margate’s Cliftonville Cultural Space and its vibrant local communities, the artist has ensembled a rendition of this project, commissioned by Open School East.
Aliaskar integrated himself into the community gatherings in regular weekly meetings and rehearsals, facilitating a collaborative composition to showcase during a public event as part of the refugee week in Margate. Attendees are invited to join the Choir, participate, and improvise to create an inclusive experience.
Additionally, Aliaskar encourages the community to actively capture footage and record sound during rehearsals to produce a sonic documentary featuring the community’s collective efforts.
