Stories & Journeys (Lighthouse Relief and Safe Place International)
Stories are what lives are made of. They are what give life meaning.
Storytelling has shaped the work of both organisations over the years, guiding our commitment to accompany and support people on the move while they are in Greece and beyond, through the many changes and challenges of the asylum processes over the years.
Following the theme of ‘Compassion’ for this year’s Refugee Week UK, Lighthouse Relief and Safe Place Intl will host a number of Storytellers to perform their written and spoken work. The event brings together people with lived experience of displacement and invites volunteers, supporters and friends to gather, listen, learn and celebrate the work of refugee writers and artists.
Among the storytellers will be Brendan Woodhouse, a search and rescue volunteer and former volunteer with Lighthouse Relief, who will present a newly published auto-biographical book, Doro, co-written with Doro Ģoumãňęh, a refugee from Gambia now living in France. The book documents Doro’s life as a small boy, working on his father’s fishing boat, to leaving home, crossing deserts and arriving in Libya, touching on questions of policy and politics, brutality and bravery, survival and belonging – issues that confront refugees everywhere.
Join us for an afternoon of stories, music and discussion. The event will include information on the work of both organisations and a call to action for those wishing to express solidarity with refugees both in the UK, Greece and beyond, including ways to get involved.
