Matteo Garrone’s Multi-awarded Film “Io Capitano”

The theme of this year’s #RefugeeWeek invites us to think about #OurHome. As stated on the refugee.org website, “From the places we gather to share meals to our collective home, planet Earth.” At Chapter in Canton, the Italian Cultural Centre Wales (ICCW), in collaboration with the Italian Film Festival (IFF), will host the screening of Io Capitano by Matteo Garrone.
Io Capitano tells the inspiring journey of two young men from Dakar striving to find safety and a new home in Europe. Their story echoes the resilience and courage of refugees everywhere. The theme “Our Home” reminds us that home is more than a place—it’s where we find comfort, love, and acceptance. This masterpiece, Io Capitano, won Best Film in 2023 at the David di Donatello and the Silver Lion at the 80th Venice International Film Festival. It will take the audience on a journey that will change their understanding of what it means to feel “loved, safe, and cherished,” to feel at #Home.
Let’s honor this by watching Io Capitano and raising awareness about the refugee experience.
The film will be screened on June 17th at Chapter at 6:10 PM, as part of the celebrations for International Refugee Week, which starts on that day. ICCW will contribute a brief introduction to the film and manage a discussion in the closed part of the foyer after the screening.
