Refugee Week Malta
After the successful launch last year, Refugee Week Malta will be happening for the second time from 18th to 25th June 2023. Endorsed by Counterpoints Arts, this is the local version of the international festival Refugee Week happening in Australia, England, Greece, Hong Kong, Berlin, South Africa, Croatia and Slovenia. This growing global movement celebrates the creativity, contributions and resilience of refugees and people who seek safety.
This year’s global theme is Compassion and we are celebrating our ability to put compassion into action. As Pope Francis expressed during his latest visit to Malta, it is only “by conducting ourselves with kindness and humanity” can we keep the ship of civilization afloat.
Through a programme filled with education, artistic and community events, we are inviting people to meet, have conversations and spend time together with the intention of encouraging ways for people to connect to each other beyond labels and inspiring a culture of care amongst all who live in Malta.
The festival represents the power in collaboration when striving towards one common vision. By adopting a grassroots approach, it has developed thanks to various voluntary, public and private partners, collaborators and supporters. These collaborations represent the hope for this festival to cultivate the celebration of diversity.
The main collaborators of this year’s edition are: artist Katel Delia, Spark15, Friends of the Earth, Geġwiġija and the Malta International Arts Festival.
The festival is generously supported by: Association for Justice, Equality and Peace, Medina Asset Management, RiskCap International Ltd, AQA Capital, Melita Foundation, APS Bank, MIB Insurance, P. Cutajar, Migrant Commission, Flutter, Quicklets, Team Humanity Norway, Moviment Graffitti, Veg Box, Regjun Port and Valletta Local Council.
The producers of Refugee Week Malta are Dance Beyond Borders who believe in the power of the arts for social change. Through Refugee Week Malta, we invite everybody to join this Movement of Welcome and be a part of a more united community.
