Sounds Like Home Choir Performance for Refugee Week 2024
Join the Migration Museum and the Sounds Like Home Choir for a special Refugee Week event, featuring an international women’s choir sharing songs from the places we call home.
Enjoy a free performance, including songs in Yoruba, Turkish, Spanish, Zulu and English.
Sounds Like Home is a community choir project for women living in Hackney. They consist of women of all backgrounds, ages, and abilities, exploring the origins, language, and musical genres of the songs that have shaped who they are and where they’re from. Sounds Like Home is supported by Counterpoints.
This event is part of the Migration Museum’s activities for Refugee Week 2024. We have also developed an exhibition guide highlighting stories from our current exhibition, Heart of the Nation: Migration and the Making of the NHS, of healthcare workers who migrated to Britain as refugees. Visit us in Lewisham to pick up a trail and discover more. Additionally, our Migrant Makers Market proudly hosts a range of products made by refugee-led businesses, alongside a selection of books for readers of all ages exploring themes of migration and displacement. These items will be featured in a special Refugee Week book display. Our community notice board will highlight the work and services available locally and regionally to support sanctuary seekers in areas including housing, legal advice, and leisure activities. Feel free to drop by to find out about ongoing work, find support you may need, or ways that you can help out and provide support to others. Finally, on Sunday 23 June, we will be hosting a stall at a Lewisham Borough of Sanctuary event at The Albany in Deptford, bringing together organisations across the borough working to support, champion and empower refugees and sanctuary seekers for a day of family fun, music, poetry and more.
The Migration Museum is proud to be a Museum of Sanctuary.
