Our Common Threads considers what we might learn from people on the move, through language, embroidery, clothing, and everyday items. Sewing the words of asylum seekers, former refugees, advocates and campaigners on their clothes, artist Bern O’Donoghue reflects on Healing, the theme of Refugee Week 2022.
Join Bern as she explores what we might have in common with those amongst us who are displaced and seeking sanctuary. Drop in to chat, or bring an everyday item of your own clothing to embroider and celebrate community, mutual care and the human ability to start again.
Bern will be at Jubilee Library at the following times:
Wednesday 22nd June 10.30am - 12.30pm and 2 - 4.30pm
Thursday 23rd June 10.30am - 12.30pm and 2 - 5pm
Bern is a visual artist making socially engaged and political work. Since 2010 Bern has invited members of the public to become involved in projects that explore the means by which we deepen our understanding of each other and enhance our world, one small creative act at a time.
Bern's work visualises data, migration and relationships to investigate the power of language to change perception. Combining time spent in private vigil with public performance and installation, Bern constucts thousands of small objects, that are used to explore meaning and human connection with visitors to galleries, museums and other public spaces. www.bernodonoghue.com
