Cornerstone Refugee Education Project (Caritas Salford) – Refugee Dine With Me

classandstaff2017

Over the past two years Caritas has created a vibrant community where asylum seekers and refugees can learn English, progress onto university and find a caring environment in a new country at Cornerstone Day Centre.

The staff and students at Caritas Refugee Education would like to invite the community of Manchester to share a conversation and meal cooked by our Syrian chef. The night will start with a brief introduction to the work we do, followed by a meal and conversation with our students who come from a range of countries including Sudan, Syria and Eritrea.

The purpose of the night will be to inform local businesses, organisations and residents about the work we are doing at Caritas with newly arrived refugees, and to share ways in which to support the integration of these individuals. We hope this evening will bring refugee and local Manchester communities together. We hope to see you there!

This Refugee Dine with Me project has been enabled thanks to funding from the University Construction Community Fund, it is a call for partnership and collaboration to local businesses, charities, organisations and educational establishments.

The aim will be to find mentoring, volunteering and employment opportunities to match refugee’s needs and aspirations, ensuring a mix of social groups is engaged. For example we will be looking for opportunities for refugees to gain mentoring opportunities and UK work experience from businesses, volunteering opportunities with older people services, on foodbank allotments from charities, and further English conversation support from universities.

The overall aim of the project is to mobilise the local community to welcome and support refugees, at existing Community Centre facilities. Cornerstone’s 150 volunteers have already responded positively to the influx of new refugees using our service, and more volunteers will join to support their welcoming, education and integration. Tensions are reduced and understanding is increased through shared meals (meals after lessons and Refugee Dine with Me), advocacy, compassion and empathy, socialising, learning and working together.
