Presented as part of Refugee Week 2022, Flee is a vividly animated documentary that tells the story of "Amin Nawabi" recalling his painful and extraordinary journey as a child refugee from Afghanistan to Denmark.
Flee, is a moving memoir of self-discovery by Danish filmmaker Jonas Poher Rasmussen. A layered and personal feature, it is framed by Rasmussen talking to his long-time friend, who he calls 'Amin'. Amin is now living in Copenhagen and embarking on the next stage of his life with his soon-to-be husband. Amin ventures on a voyage of reflection and confession with his friend and filmmaker and recalls memories he has suppressed for many years. The journey starts with his escape from a war-torn Kabul with the last of his family after the Soviet withdrawal in 1989.
"This animated documentary from Danish film-maker Jonas Poher Rasmussen is an irresistibly moving and engrossing story, whose emotional implications we can see being absorbed into the minds of the director and his subject, almost in real time. Rasmussen’s elegant digital animation, interspersed with live-action archive TV footage, makes for a seamless link between the present and the remembered past" - Peter Bradshaw, Guardian
