Launching in June to coincide with Refugee Week 2020, this new online exhibition tells the story of the 4,000 Basque children who came to Britain, and many on to East Anglia, to escape the horrors of the Spanish Civil War. Using rarely seen film footage and original photographs along with the voices of rescuers and refugees, Havens East tells this story in a new and engaging way.
Volunteer research teams have been working in Norwich and Cambridge to bring together stories of the journey, the arrival and the places, in both cities, that welcomed the children.
The website offers insight into life in the camps and hostels – schoolwork, housework, food, concerts and of course football.
This fascinating, moving and sometimes funny story was meant to be displayed in physical exhibitions in both cities, but current circumstances caused us to reimagine the whole project as an online 'virtual' exhibition in the form of a stand-alone website.
