Islington & Hackney Amnesty “Refugees Welcome” Summer Fair

AMNESTY-FAIR-FLYER-small

Islington and Hackney Amnesty Group is celebrating the contribution made by refugees to our community with their annual eclectic summer fair that mixes international music and food with traditional British summer stalls.

Sudanese singers, Syrian speakers and Turkish musicians will be side by side with tombola, book stalls and home-made cakes on Islington Green on Saturday 15 June. And the whole event will be MC-ed by the fabulous Sajeela Kershi.

With activities for children and the opportunity to take action for human rights there will be something for everyone at this free event.

Music from:

Shurooq Abu Elnaas

Sudanese vocalist Shurooq has appeared on MBC television (UAE) and performed at the Cairo Opera House to great aclaim. Her musical repertoire spans the Sahel and Arab world with her own songs bringing elements of
romantic imagery "Beheb el Leyl" (I love the Night) and political awareness.

Her anti-war song "Um al Yatama" (Mother of Orphans) was written for her by Mahjoub Sherif, the late "People's Poet" of Sudan, while her latest release "Min Aglik ya Watani", with lyrics by AbdelGadir elKuteyabi, expresses solidarity with the freedom movement in Sudan.
