Jewish refugees and European Antisemitism22

Talks by the authors Peter Bradley and Simon Bell about their latest books, which relate aspects of Jewish refugees’ experience and identity in Britain and the legacy of European Antisemitism on society today. The authors talks will be followed by a panel discussion including Amanda Jones, CEO of Shropshire Supports Refugees and Alex Holmes-Brown of Shropshire Ethnic Minorities Alliance. This event is part of Shropshire Refugee Week 2022.

Peter Bradley was the Labour MP for The Wrekin between 1997 and 2005. More recently, he co-founded and directed Speakers’ Corner Trust, a charity which promotes freedom of expression, open debate and active citizenship in the UK and developing democracies. He has written, usually on politics, for a wide range of publications, including The Times, the Guardian, the Independent, the New Statesman and the New European. His book, The Last Train - A Family History of the Final Solution, was published in May by Harper North.
Simon Bell is the author of Remembering the Holocaust and the Impact on Societies Today. He is a former career mental health nurse who dealt with perpetrators and victims of crime for 22 years. His clinical interest was trauma: its causes and impact. His academic interest is the Holocaust and the causes and challenges of hate and intolerance in society today. His talk will look the selective nature of memory and national guilt and at how lessons from the past are so often not learned from.
