LSBU are pleased to present a lunch and learn with Room for Refugees to kickstart our activities for Refugee Week 2021!
Room for Refugees is a community hosting network that offers safe, temporary accommodation to refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants in people’s homes. Volunteer ‘Hosts’ sign up their spare room online, and are paired up with a refugee guest in need of a temporary place to stay. We started out in 2002 in Glasgow in response to the growing numbers of people facing destitution and homelessness. Room for Refugees is a practical, human response to the ‘hostile environment’ policies in the UK – we believe no one should be destitute solely because of their immigration status.
By providing breathing space in a safe home, guests can rebuild their life and move on from a period of crisis. We work with non-profit organisations across the UK, supporting more than 150 people each year to resolve their legal and/or housing situation, whether that is submitting an asylum case, finding a job or starting university or moving into independent accommodation.
To find out more or register your interest as a host, please visit: https://www.roomforrefugees.com/
Freya Dargavel, Accommodation Coordinator for Room for Refugees, will share lots of information on how it works plus we'll also be joined by LSBU's Ruth Macleod, Data Curator & Archivist, who has hosted refugee guests in her spare room via Room for Refugees. Ruth will be sharing her experiences & her reasons for signing up and there'll be an opportunity to ask questions to both Freya and Ruth!
This event will be delivered via Zoom and you will receive the joining instructions the day before. Please pop it in your calendars!
