Migrant Mothers Matter: A workshop discussing maternity peer supporters for recent migrants

Migrant pregnant women need compassionate and culturally competent care. As part of an EU funded international project (ORAMMA), more than 20 Maternity Peer Supporters (MPS) were recruited and trained to help new migrants through their pregnancy and after birth journey, with the aim of reducing social isolation and increasing access to health care.

Following training MPS were paired are far as possible with pregnant women with some shared culture and language. Training was delivered using a variety of resources and interactive methods, aiming to enable the MPS to support migrant women's engagement in perinatal care and empower the women to achieve a positive experience.

A number of MPS contributed to the creation of a video resource which is presented in this workshop along with the opportunity to discuss the project and it's evolving to a community led “Friendly Mothers group” with both researcher and participants.
