The event “Searching for Safety” will take place on the 20th of May and is the result of the work developed by a Portuguese 11th grade class about the subject of refugees throughout several classes of English as a foreign language.

During these classes, the aforementioned Portuguese students, who are constantly confronted with hate speech and radical political views in relation to those who are forced to leave their homes, were asked to see things through the perspective of the ‘Other’, namely by discussing several facts about refugees which were previously unknown to them, by reading poetry written by refugees, and by playing a video game which aims at presenting the perspective of those fleeing from their homes.

Throughout the event, the students of this 11th grade class will present, to other groups of learners, the knowledge they were able to acquire during these classes, by giving a lecture that they themselves prepared, and will ask the students attending the event to play the video game Syrian Journey: Choose you own escape route (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-32057601).
