Thursday 13 June 2019
5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Technology and Learning Centre, 1 Reading Lane
Come along to find out how you can support asylum seekers and refugees in Hackney.
The evening will begin with a screening of Child Migrants Welcome?, a short film that explores experiences of welcome and non-welcome of unaccompanied child migrants from across the UK, both from the point of view of the young people themselves but also those who know or care for them. This film is part of the Child Migrant Stories project (www.childmigrantstories.com).
The screening will be followed by a panel talking about how you can support unaccompanied asylum seeking children through different projects. The discussion will include representatives from:
- Hackney Council, who have a specific team supporting young Unaccompanied Asylum Seekers and are currently recruiting hosts and carers for them
- JCORE, who run a befriending project for unaccompanied asylum seekers
- Refugee Support Network, who run an education mentoring programme for young unaccompanied asylum seekers
There will also be an opportunity to view material in Hackney Museum’s collection, which shows that Hackney has been a safe haven for people fleeing countries from around the world, since at least the 17th century.
Whether you have a spare bedroom or a spare hour, come and see how you can help.
This event is co-hosted by Hackney Museum & Hackney Children and Families Service, to mark Refugee Week 2019.
