You, me and those who came before

Wolverhampton City of Sanctuary presents, ‘You, Me and Those who Came Before’ as part of Refugee Week 2019. This multi-art disciplinary exhibition documents the reality of those in flight from persecution and war, and different migration movements over the years. ‘You, Me and Those who Came Before’ evidences the creative resilience of individuals, families and communities forced or choosing to start their lives again in a foreign country. Artists reflect on their own family’s history as second and third generation migrants.

Themes of identity, migration, destitution, integration and community are explored throughout the exhibition – all of which underscore our common humanity and the inherent need for the culture of hospitality. Artwork from emerging local artists, University of Wolverhampton students, newly arrived artists, community groups, and recently awarded Schools of Sanctuary illustrates the city’s commitment to untold stories and marginalised voices.
