It’s the shared moments, the everyday gestures of kindness, and the simple acts that bring us closer to one another— whether through a smile, a chat, or an invitation to join in. As the writer bell hooks said, “We can begin the process of making community wherever we are. We can begin by sharing a smile, a warm greeting, a bit of conversation…”
During this Refugee Week, we invite you to extend your sense of connection beyond your immediate circle and discover the power of building relationships across your neighbourhood.
Ways to Meet Your Neighbours and Build Community:
- Start with a Smile: Take a moment to greet someone new in your neighbourhood, at work, or at school. Ask how they’re doing, share a bit of your day, or simply acknowledge them with a friendly nod.
- Visit a Local Café or Library: Step outside your usual routine and visit a new place in your area. You might be surprised at the new faces you meet and the interesting conversations you spark.
- Hold Space for a Conversation: Whether it’s a casual chat with a neighbour or a deeper conversation about the things that matter, make time for active listening. Sometimes, just having someone truly listen can build a meaningful connection.
- Join or Start a Community Group: Whether it’s a book club, a sports team, or a local volunteer initiative, connecting with others through shared interests is a powerful way to build community.
- Support a Befriending Service or Volunteer: Get involved with a local befriending service, or volunteer in your community to welcome newcomers or those in need of support.
One Step Further:
- Retail or Hospitality: If you work in a retail or hospitality business, think about how you can make your space more welcoming to everyone. Could you place conversation starters on tables, display a local charity’s work, or create spaces where people feel invited to chat and share their stories?
- Foster a Welcoming Environment: Encourage your workplace or community group to host open events or informal meetups where people can get to know each other, share experiences, and learn about one another’s backgrounds.
This Refugee Week, let’s unleash the superpower of community, one conversation at a time. By meeting your neighbours and connecting with those around you, we can create a world where everyone feels seen, heard, and like they belong.
