This year, we invite you to send a message; one message can be as powerful as one thousand. There aren’t many more simple ways to share joy or show someone you care than by sending a message. It can even just be: “I’m here”, or perhaps “I’m thinking of you – you’re not alone”.

All you need is a pen and paper, and access to a computer or a mobile phone.

Join us in sharing a message of compassion and hope, and let’s see how many new connections we can make this Refugee Week.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

Quick and easy:

  • What message would you like to send to welcome  people seeking sanctuary?  Share your message online using #RefugeeWeek and #SimpleActs #CompassionIntoAction, together let’s flood social media with compassion  and solidarity.

Going further:

  • Refugee Council have created this online action for you to send a message of compassion that will be shared with the refugees and people seeking asylum that they are supporting
  • Write, draw or craft a  message of welcome, compassion and hope, and display it somewhere the world can see it.
  • Join with others to organise a letter-writing exchange for Refugee Week. How will your messages travel across real and imagined borders? What can we learn from each other?
  • Send a message to someone who is going through a challenging  time, to let them know they are not alone.
  • Write a letter of compassion to a refugee. Here are some great initiatives, Letters of Love to Ukraine, Message of Hope, Or Any Refugee
  • Send a thank you card or message to someone who has helped you. It could be recently, or a long time ago. Maybe they taught you something, supported you through difficulties or made you feel welcome, and you never had the chance to thank them – until now!
  • Write a message to your imagined descendants or someone in the future. What are your hopes for the world they are living in? What might we do today to bring it about?
  • How do you feel about the current situation for refugees in the UK and the government’s proposed plans? Put your compassion into action and write to your MP about how you feel and what change you’d like to see in the world.

If you would like to send your message even further, you can use the app Tarjimly to help refugees and aid workers with translation and accessing services. It’s free, very quick to sign up to, and very easy to use!

Share your message with us on social media using #SimpleActs #CompassionIntoAction #RefugeeWeek

If your social media post includes images or names of other people, make sure you get permission first, including from parents/ guardians of anyone under 18.
